He was reared on a farm, where he remained until thirty years of age. He was a carpenter, which trade he followed many years, but beginning in 1880 he was engaged in the insurance business.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of the board of trustees of which he was secretary fifteen years or more; was also secretary of the board of education. Politically, he is a democrat.
