A bachelor, in his latter years he lived a rather retired life, spending the summer on his farm near Paris, Pennsylvania, and at his fine residence near Natchez, Mississippi, where he went to live with an old aunt in his younger days. He saw some pretty hard times during the [Civil] war, and had a great amount of property taken.
