He was indebted to the public schools of Ferguson township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, for his educational privileges, and after laying aside his text books he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He was the owner of a valuable farm of 106 acres, which he placed under a high state of cultivation, and improved with good, substantial farm buildings.
Politically, he was a Jeffersonian Democrat, strongly favoring the free coinage of gold and silver. Religiously, he was a faithful member of the German Reformed Church.
