He was reared in Randolph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, until thirteen years of age, when he was thrown on his own resources. For one year he worked in a tan-yard, and then in a carding-mill in Conneaut Township, Crawford County, until twenty-six years of age. In 1848 he settled on a farm in North Shenango Township, part of which he cleared and fenced, and on which he made all the improvements in buildings, etc.
