General Notes: Husband - Dr. Charles Anderson Reed

He received his early education in the district schools of his immediate neighborhood and in the high school of New Castle, Pennsylvania. After completing an academic education at the State Normal School of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, he read medicine for a while, and eventually, in 1882, entered Miami Medical College of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which institution he graduated in 1885. His preceptors and advisors in medical studies were Dr. Joseph Reed of Sharon, and Dr. J. J. Wallace of New Castle. Dr. Reed also took a one-year's course in the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he was a resident physician. In July, 1886, he took up his residence in New Castle, and began a practice.

He held the office of city physician two years. Socially, he was a member of the Knights of Pythias, New Castle Lodge, No. 404, in which society he was past chancellor and trustee since 1893. He was also a member of Shenango Lodge, I. O. O. F.

He enjoyed the best local educational advantages, passing through the New Castle High School, and graduated from the Edinburgh State Normal School, in the class of 1881. He then taught school for one year. From an early age he had cherished the idea of engaging in the practice of medicine, and after leaving the Normal School he entered the Miami Medical College, of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he was graduated in 1885, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. For a year, in 1885-86, he served as interne and resident physician at the West Penn Hospital at Pittsburgh, and then settled in general practice at New Castle. His practice grew steadily and gained the favorable notice of his professional contemporaries, so that he became a member of the staffs of the Shenango Valley and New Castle hospitals, serving them from their beginnings. He was also examiner for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, the Equitable Life Assurance Company of New York, the Bankers' Life Insurance Company of Des Moines, Iowa, and the Equitable, of Iowa. Dr. Reed was as well skilled in surgery as in medicine, and his practice covered many cases. Outside of professional circles, Dr. Reed was well known in social and civic life, being a member of New Castle Board of Trade, and of the Field and Masonic clubs. In matters political, he was Independent. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of New Castle. He was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Mahoning Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons; New Castle Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Council, Commandery, Consistory and Zem Zem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He also was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution in New Castle. [PAH, 365]
