He was born on the old home place in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and there passed his school days. He married and they moved to Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1872, remaining there until 1877, when they returned to the farm in Nottingham township. He served as inspector of elections on several occasions, and in religion the family were all members of the Presbyterian Church.
