He received his education in the common schools of his native village, and attended Duff's Commercial College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Beginning life without capital, he successfully engaged in the lumber, sawmill and farming businesses, and later conducted a butchery. In political opinion he was a Democrat. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.
