Arriving at his majority, he pursued the occupation of a farmer till 1879, when he engaged in the mercantile business at Ludwick, Pennsylvania. In religion he was a Lutheran and a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran church of Greensburg, and in politics an ardent adherent to the principles of the Republican party.
