He was educated in the public schools of Peters township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and at the Lititz Academy, Lancaster County. After leaving school he engaged in farming, at which he continued until 1899. He was a director in the Centennial Fire Insurance Company, with which he was connected for twenty-five years or more. He was the census enumerator for Peters township in 1891, and was a school director for the borough of Mercersburg, being elected as a Republican in 1903. He was active and influential in party work. With his wife he was a member of the Back Creek congregation of the German Baptist Church.
