When he was one year of age his parents removed to Oil Creek township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and he lived there until 1867, after which he removed to Venango borough, Crawford County, and there engaged in mercantile business. He removed to Woodcock in 1872, settling on a farm and becoming occupied with the breeding of short-horned Durham cattle, in which he was very successful as well as with his farming interests. As a supporter of the Republican party he was of considerable influence in local politics, and he was a member of the local lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons, at Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
