He purchased the old home of his ancestry in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. For several years previous to his purchasing the family home, he was employed to superintend the canal works.
His family consisted of six sons and three daughters.

She was a direct descendant of Gen. John Stark, of Revolutionary fame.
