General Notes: Husband - Alfred D. Gillespie

He was educated in the public schools of his native borough and when seventeen years of age went to California, residing on a cattle ranch for about three years, after which he returned to Greenville and attended the State Normal School at Edinboro. Married in the spring of 1870, he engaged in farming in Hempfield township, Mercer County, and later became identified with the coal mining industries of Butler County, Pennsylvania. There he owned and operated a mine for a time, and then leased his property to the Independent Coal Company of Pittsburgh. Mr. Gillespie then returned to Greenville and became connected with the Electric Light, Heat and Power Company, as manager and treasurer of the plant, which was the only one of the kind in Greenville. He owned the old Gillespie homestead farm in Hempfield township, having purchased the interests of the other heirs. Politically, Mr. Gillespie was a supporter of the Democratic party, and held the office of assessor for six years. He was a member of the Eureka Lodge No. 290, A. F. & A. M.; Mound Chapter No. 212, Royal Arch Masons; and Mt. Calvary Commandery No. 67, Knights Templar.
