He received his education in the common and high schools of his native county. He lost his father when but sixteen years of age, and first engaged as a clerk and bookkeeper for the Greenville Gas Company, in which position he continued two years. In March, 1902, he accepted the position of secretary and treasurer for the Electric Light, Heat and Power Company. He was made manager and treasurer in January, 1903, serving until February 1, 1905, when he resigned. On September 4, 1904, he bought out Downs & Beatty's insurance and real estate business, taking charge February 1, 1905. In May, 1906, he purchased the insurance business of Jay Scott Smith; also bought that of W. H. Beil, on April 1, 1907. Upon the organization of what is known as the Gillespie Company, January 1, 1907, he was elected its president. This corporation had over thirty agencies which were therefore controlled by Mr. Gillespie. He was also a stockholder in the Electric Light, Heat and Power Company of Greenville. He was a member of the Executive Committee of Pennsylvania State Fire Insurance Agents, and a member of the Pittsburg Life Underwriters' Association. Always being foremost in the interests of his district, he was elected president of the Greenville Board of Fire Underwriters, district manager of the Prudential Life Insurance Company, for five counties, and general agent for the National Surety Company, covering eight counties in Northwestern Pennsylvania. In church faith, Mr. Gillespie was Methodist Episcopal. He belonged to the Alhambra Lodge No. 293, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Politically, he was a Democrat.
