About 1802, David and Adam Gilliland, who were enterprising and business-like men, purchased from Peter McKinney a property in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on the Connoquenessing on which they built a mill. The first log mill was there erected by David Gilliland, near the beginning of the 1800s. Later, another mill was built on the same site by Barnet Gilliland in 1827.
