He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and lived within four miles of his birthplace his entire life of fifty-two years. He was left fatherless in boyhood and was bound out to a stranger, but grew into a reliable, honorable and industrious man. He acquired a farm in Allegheny County, but was able to provide only sparingly for his family, it being an unusually large one.
