He was born in Adams township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was reared a farmer. In 1889 he purchased the residence and one-half of the family homestead farm in Forward township, which he then cultivated successfully. Politically, he was a Republican, and filled the offices of overseer of the poor and township assessor. He was a member of the Reformed church, and was one of the trustees in the Evans City congregation.
