He was born on the farm in Ligonier valley, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a tiller of the soil and owned land in the valley. In politics he was a Whig, but when that party passed out of existence became a Democrat. He held several of the township offices, although not an office seeker. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
