He was the pilot of an Allegheny River boat and died by drowning in the Allegheny River (other sources say French Creek).

He was a pioneer settler of Franklin, Pennsylvania, and at one time the owner of the land on which the lower part of the First Ward, in the neighborhood of Smith's Run, later stood.
