General Notes: Husband - John Putnam

It is known that he was a resident of Aston Abbotts, England, as late as 1627, as the date of the baptism of the youngest son shows, however just when he came to New England is not known. Family tradition is responsible for the date 1634, and the tradition is recognized as having been in the family for over two centuries. In 1641, new style, John Putnam was granted land in Salem. He was a farmer, and exceedingly well off for those times. He wrote a fair hand, as deeds on file show. In these deeds he styles himself "yeoman;" once in 1655; "husbandman." His land amounted to two hundred and fifty acres, and was situated between Davenport's hill and Porter's hill. John Putnam was admitted to the church in 1647, six years later than his wife, and was also a freeman the same year. The town of Salem in 1644 voted that a patrol of two men be appointed each Lord's Day to walk forth during worship, and take notice of such as did not attend service, and who were idle, etc., and to present such cases to the magistrate; all of those appointed were men of standing in the community. For the ninth day John Putnam and John Hathorne were appointed. The following account of the death of John Putnam was written in 1733, by his grandson Edward: "He ate his supper, went to prayer with his family, and died before he went to sleep." He married in England Priscilla (perhaps Gould), who was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641.

He probably resided in Stewkley with his parents until the death of his father, when he inherited the estates at Aston Abbotts, and lived there until he came to New England. According to family tradition he came to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1634, but the first record of him is March 21, 1640-41, when his wife was admitted to the church, and in the same year he received a grant of land. He was admitted to the church, April 4, 1647. He was a farmer by occupation, and one of the wealthy men of his section. Prior to his death he gave his sons, John and Nathaniel, and probably others, a farm each. He was the father of seven children. [GPHWP, 1611]

The American progenitor of the Putnam family, John Putnam, came from the Bucks County region of England, where the family had a centuries-long recorded history, to settle in what is now Danvers, Massachusetts, not later than 1640. The name Putnam is a contracted form of the original name of Puttenham, borne for centuries by the family whose coat-of-arms is reproduced in the several histories of the family written by the late Eben Putnam, of Massachusetts, who served for years as Historian of the American Legion. All the famous Putnams, including Generals Israel and Rufus Putnam (both of Revolutionary War fame), the New York Putnam family of publishers, the late Herbert Putnam, librarian of Congress, and a host of others distinguished in various lines of endeavor, sprang from the same ancestor, John Putnam of England and Danvers.

The Putnams are an old and well known family. The first representative of the family in this country was one John Putnam, one of the earliest settlers in Salem, Massachusetts, who, "for the free enjoyment of the rights of conscience and the liberty of worshiping God in his own manner,'' left the home of his youth and cast his lot with the Pilgrims. The original name of the family was Patenham or Putenham, and they resided in Buckinghamshire, England. On coming to America, John Putnam was accompanied by his three sons-Thomas, Nathaniel, and John. Two of his younger brothers also came with him, landing in 1634, and settling in Salem, where they became prosperous and independent farmers.
