After the death of her mother, she kept house for her father and ran the dairy business on the farm, also raising a large number of chickens. She made two trips a week to Vintondale with her butter and eggs, and was also agent in the district for a New York cloak house and the Larkin Soap Company, making a success of each venture. She was ambitious and enterprising, and proved herself a thoroughly capable business woman.
