He was reared on the farm and obtained the ordinary common school education. At the age of twenty-two years he left the farm and went to Tennessee, locating in Dixon County, where he worked at carpentering. He remained in Tennessee twelve years, farming and working at his trade. In 1880 he went from Tennessee to Bradford, Pennsylvania. He was in New York state for a while and moved to Grove City, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1883, and followed contracting and farming. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and politically he was a Democrat.
