General Notes: Husband - Henry Alonzo "Lon" Melat

He grew up in Rockland Township, Venango County, PA, but moved west to work in the oil fields of Illinois and Indiana. He made his way south to the fields of Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. He became a well known oil well driller in that area and became a drilling superintendent for the Gulf Refining Company, later the Gulf Oil Corporation. During the early 1900s, attention began to focus on offshore oil production. It was Lon who designed Gulf's first "Over-water Oil Rig". The first well that was drilled using these methods penetrated the bottom of Caddo Lake, Louisiana in 1912. As a result of his accomplishments, he moved up through the ranks at Gulf. Soon after the opening of Caddo Lake, he became production superintendent for Louisiana. Later he became a vice president for Gulf and moved to McAllen, Texas. He worked for Gulf Oil for a total of sixty years. [DKM, 15]
