He attended Graham School and was graduated from Franklin High School in 1919. He played the piano and organ for school and church activities and organized orchestras and singing groups. Among the latter was the Fort Venango Entertainers, which attained some local fame. He enrolled in Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 1922 and following his graduation, taught in McClellandtown, Pennsylvania. He also lived in Ohio where he taught at Wellington, Sparta, and Springfield. During his teaching career, he did graduate work at Ohio State and Penn State Universities, as well as studying at the Miami University of Ohio School of Music.
