General Notes: Husband - Francis Gramly

He was a native of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and came to Brush valley, Centre County, either in 1795 or 1796, a year later than his brother-in-law, Christopher Spangler. He bought the tract later owned by Snook and Geiswait, better known as the Philip Gramly farm. The stone house on the place was erected by him in 1804. The saw-mill was built prior to 1803. Besides the above-mentioned place, he owned the farms that later belonged to Reuben Gramly, Joseph Gramly, Jefferson Royer, John Shultz (Christopher Gramly farm), and William Walker.

About the middle of the 1700s a number of people bearing the name of Gramly came to America from Germany, and it is supposed that Francis Gramly was among them, that he settled in Pennsylvania and married there. It is certain that he came into Brush Valley, Centre County in 1793, from Northampton County, with his wife, and from them all of the name in Brush Valley are descended. He carried with him a sack full of hard money when he rode into Brush Valley on horseback, and he became the owner of an immense tract of land in that "Garden of Centre County," where he operated a sawmill while clearing and improving the property. Several of his sons, all of whom remained at home, received at his death valuable estates. He died in the early 1830s, aged about seventy years, and he and his wife, who attained the age of eighty-six, were buried at Rebersburg. They were Lutherans in religion.

General Notes: Wife - Barbara Spangler
