He graduated from Brown University in 1894, from Harvard Law School in 1898, and then was pursuing studies abroad. When a junior in the university he was elected a member of the American Historical Association, and read before it, at Washington, D. C., a paper on "Appeals to the Privy Council from the Colonies, with especial reference to Rhode Island." He was a member of the Ames Grey Law Club and one of the editors of the Harvard Law Review; published an article in the Law Quarterly Review of Oxford and was a member of the Inner Temple, London, of the International Society for the Furtherance of Legal Science of Berlin, and the Selden Society of England.

He was graduated from Brown University in 1894; from the Harvard Law School in 1898; and in 1905 took the degree of Doctor of Laws at the University of Berlin, Germany. He became a fellow of Emanuel College, Cambridge, England, and the first American to hold that honorable position. In 1906 he accepted the chair of lecturer of law in the University of Cambridge, England, and became a lecturer in English law in the same institution. He was the recognized authority on the law of the air (or aviation), and lectured on that subject in London, at the request of the faculties of laws, and before the International Society of Law in Paris. He was a member of the American Historical Society, and while an undergraduate of Brown University prepared a paper and delivered the same at Washington before the society. [GPHAV, 566]
