The Hartsook and Gray families were the first settlers of the Franklin Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, coming from Frederick County, Maryland, to what was known as the Half Moon country.

He was born near Hagerstown, Maryland, and came to Half-Moon, Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1788, locating on the tract later owned by Samuel Gray, where he reared a large family.
