General Notes: Husband - James Marsh

He lived on his parents' farm in Plum township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, until the discovery of oil near Titusville, when he followed the great rush of wealth seekers into the narrow valley through which flows Oil Creek. He was engaged in helping to drill a well with a springpole (hemlock engine), when the news came of the firing on Fort Sumter, when he enlisted in a company of the 179th New York Volunteers. It was while serving his country that he was injured in a most peculiar manner. A detail of his regiment, including himself, were accompanying a supply train from City Point to the northern lines in front of Petersburg, and while passing through a long stretch of woods that skirted each
side of the track, the train was fired upon by a body of rebel infantry. The engineer threw open the throttle and the train tore along over the rails at a terrific speed, the sparks from the locomotive setting fire to a car of baled hay, on which he and a number of his companions were huddled, trying to escape the bullets that were whistling danger-ously close. To remain on the hay was certain death by fire, and waiting until the heat became unbearable, he jumped, to be hurled against a pile of ties at the side of the track. He never fully recovered from the injuries he received and was thereafter unable to do manual labor.
