He was born near Hickory, Washington County, Penn­sylvania, and came to Butler County in infancy. He received a common school education and afterwards attended Witherspoon Institute and the Butler Academy, and then engaged in teaching. In 1861 he purchased the Robert Bartley farm, in Buffalo township, upon which he thereafter resided. In 1862 Mr. Greer enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, was mustered in at Harrisburg, on August 23, and sent to Washington, D. C. He participated with his regiment in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and Chancellorsville, and was discharged on May 31, 1863. He served as orderly sergeant until the resignation of Lieutenant Harvey, and then became second lieutenant. In February, 1864, he re-enlisted in Company L, Fourteenth Penn­sylvania Cavalry, and was sent to Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was cap­tured July 3, 1864, and taken to Andersonville prison, was exchanged in Decem­ber following, and came home on furlough. In April, 1865, he rejoined his regi­ment, and was sent to Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was honorably discharged on August 8, 1865. He returned to Butler County and resumed the duties of farm life. In politics, Mr. Greer was a stanch Republican, and filled the offices of overseer of the poor, township clerk, school director and auditor, and in 1872 was elected register and recorder of Butler County. In 1881 he was elected prothonotary, and was also assessor of his township. He was one of the prom­inent and active Republicans of the county, and always took a decided interest in public affairs. He was a member of the Lutheran church and an elder in that denomination. He was connected with the G. A. R. as a member of James Harvey Post, Number 514.
Nine children were born to his marriage with Grizzella M. Walker, four of whom were still living in 1895.
