Although he had a home through early life and was given some educational opportunities, he was entirely dependent upon his own resources when he came as a youth to Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a farmer for a number of years. For many years prior to his decease, he lived in Mahoning Township.
