This may be the same person:
Col. David Grier was born in Mount Pleasant, Adams (York) County, in 1742. Studied law and became a lawyer in 1771. Became a captain in Col. William Irvine's regiment for the war of independence. His commission dated January 9, 1776, and he was promoted major October 25, 1776. He then was made lieutenant-colonel of the Seventh Pennsylvania, and commanded the regiment after Col. Irvine became a prisoner. [HAC1886, 73]
