He was reared in his native town, attended the seminary there, and when a young man entered the bank at Selins Grove, Pennsylvania, of which his father was president. Later he was with the firm of McCarty, Moyer & Schnure, general merchants, and was in the mercantile business up to the time of his death. He was a Democrat in politics, a Lutheran in his church relations, and, socially, a Mason.
