He was brought up on the family homestead and attended the common schools. He owned one hundred and thirty-six acres of land, but later lived retired at Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. In politics he was a Democrat; he was supervisor, and was superintendent of the county home for the first year after its establishment.
