A carpenter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he accompanied his two brothers, John and David, and settled in Oregon. He married and had a son Henry, a machinist by trade, who enlisted in the Union army, being enrolled as private and returned from the front with the colonel's rank, all of the intervening grades having been awarded for gallant conduct during the war; at the close of the conflict he became a cork manufacturer of Chicago, Illinois.
