He was educated at Erie, Pennsylvania, Academy, learned the trade of tanner and currier at Hay's tannery in Erie, and was in the book trade a number of years, in 1859, associated with his brother Charles E. He built and then operated the Gunnison Tannery in Erie, served on the School Board and City Councils, and held various other public trusts.
