He was educated in the public schools of Erie, Pennsylvania, and then engaged in business with his father, who continued to manufacture pumps until 1883, and then changed to the planing-mill and lumber business.
He and his wife were members of the Universalist Church; he was a Mason and a member of the A. O. U. W. Politically he was a Republican, and was elected a member of the school board in 1894.
