After receiving his education at the local public schools, he learned the trade of mason and plasterer, and later engaged in a contracting business for himself. This he continued with great success during his entire life, but at the same time he continued to cultivate his farm, which was a very large one. To this he applied the most scientific methods, with the result that its productivity increased to an enormous degree, and it became one of the model farms of the region. His farm consisted of a choice tract of forty acres.
