During his youth, he was provided with excellent educational privileges, being a student for some time in the Lewisburg Academy (later Bucknell College), and completing his literary course in the Dickinson Seminary at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. For ten years thereafter he successfully engaged in teaching school through the winter months, while the summer seasons were spent in farming. In the spring of 1884 he purchased the homestead in Lewis township, on which he then resided, and besides its cultivation he was also interested in the milling business, in partnership with A. E. Grove, owning and operating a grist and saw mill on Penn creek in Lewis township. His political support was given the men and measures of the Republican party, and although not a member of any church, he was a believer in the Christian religion.
