General Notes: Husband - Joseph Louis Hoey

He was born three miles southwest of Murrysville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He received his primary education in the common schools, attending the Hoey school and the Clark school. He began life as a printer, serving for eight months with D. W. Shryock, editor of the Greensburg Herald. At the end of that time he returned for one year to his home on the farm, and then spent two years and a half with L. B. Highberger, learning the tinsmith's trade. After serving his time he worked for about a year as journeyman for Mr. Highberger, at Penn Station. In April, 1876, he established a tin shop at Manor Station, which he closed in October, 1878, going to Fremont, Iowa. In December of the same year he went from that place to Hamilton, Missouri, where from March to December, 1879, he worked at his trade for W. D. Patterson. He then returned home on account of the illness of his mother and sister, subsequently returned to W. D. Patterson, subsequently to Cameron, Missouri, where he was employed for three months as a tinner by Burr and Corn, hardware merchants. He also served for one year as travelling representative of Segner and Condit, publishers, of Burlington, Iowa, covering the states of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Returning to Murrysville, April 20, 1882, he established a tin shop in the old building above the postoffice, and in 1886 erected a store, with a residence adjoining. The tin business gradually developed into general hardware and implements. In politics Mr. Hoey was a Republican. He was a man of strong religious convictions, a lover of good music, and an active worker in the Presbyterian church, which he served as elder, clerk of sessions, and superintendent of Sunday school. In 1881 he was a delegate to the National Young Men's Christian Association convention at Kansas City, Missouri, and in 1894 to the state Christian Endeavor convention at York, Pennsylvania. He was a member of Walurba Council, J. O. U. A. M., No. 859, of Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, and No. 760, R. A., of Wilkinsburg.
