General Notes: Husband - Levi G. Stitt

He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the "Hills" country school. In his early years he worked in the summer on the farm and during the winter in the wagon shop with his father. In 1882 he accepted a position as carpenter in the steel plant of Laufman & Company, who were erecting for themselves two heavy extra buildings. Two months later he was made boss carpenter, having charge of the erection of the buildings. At the end of two years he was again promoted, being given entire charge of all the machinery. The plant was subsequently transferred, becoming known as the Volta Iron Company, and later as the Apollo Iron & Steel Company. It was finally absorbed by the American Sheet Steel Company, Mr. Stitt retaining his position as master mechanic until March, 1904, when he was promoted to general superintendent. On the building of the enormous plant at Vandergrift he was called to that place to superintend its erection and when ground was broken threw the first shovelful of earth. While still retaining control of the Apollo plant, he superintended the erection of all the buildings at Vandergrift as well as the foundation for machinery, placing the machinery and putting it in operation. After the building of the plant he was transferred to Vandergrift and made general superintendent of all the Valley plants, including those at Apollo, Vandergrift, Hyde Park and Leechburg. The one at Saltsburg was later added, the Apollo plant having been dismantled. He was a member of Kiskiminetas Lodge, No. 617, F. and A. M., of Vandergrift. Politically he was a Democrat. [HWC 1906 II, 521]

During his boyhood days he attended school in his native township. At the same time he assisted in running the farm, and helped his father at carpenter work, gaining a practical knowledge of both. Remaining with his father until twenty-two years old, he then entered the employ of P. H. Laufman & Co., at Apollo, as a carpenter, but later became a millwright and was made a master mechanic. From the spring of 1882 until 1886 he worked with this concern, and upon its absorption into the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company, he was continued as its employee. He built the plant at Vandergrift, which was the most modern in the country at the time. In addition to his other interests Mr. Stitt owned eighty-three acres in Parks township, which was taken up by A. Fiscus, but later sold to Philip Carney, from whom Mr. Stitt purchased it. He had a beautiful home built by him in 1909, and equipped with all modern improvements, and the site commanded a magnificent view.
He was an independent voter politically. His family were Methodists. Fraternally he was a member of Kiskiminetas Lodge, No. 617, F. & A. M., of Vandergrift.
