General Notes: Husband - Francis McClintock

He was born in Lancaster County, PA, and settled in Venango County where Petroleum Centre was located in 1797. His first improvement was the clearing of three acres of land, and the building of a log cabin, in which he lived and kept bachelor's hall during the summers of 1797 and 1798. In the spring of 1799, he started from Lancaster County with a yoke of oxen; traveled an indian path until he reached Pittsburgh, where he procured a bag of salt, tied it on the oxen and started for his new home in Venango County, reaching it in safety. He went to Harrisville a short time after his return, and was married. He returned with his wife and went to housekeeping in the log cabin. He continued in the summer season to clear away the forest, and followed shoemaking in the winter, for fifteen years. He then erected a saw-mill, and engaged in the lumber business for 21 years. Again he returned to his trade, and worked at shoemaking until within two years of his death. He used to go to mill at Meadville, a distance of about 50 or 60 miles by water, in a dug-out canoe. The route was down Oil creek, then up French creek, to Meadville. This trip was made in the spring and fall. During the summer months they would pound the wheat and corn and boil it, which they would live on until they could go to mill. Their principal drinks were chocolate, coffee, rye whiskey and water. The clothing was mostly of their own manufacture, consisting of flaxen goods for summer, and for winter, buckskin pants and moccasins for the men, and linsey dresses for the women. [HVC 1879, 612]

He was probably a native of Maryland, and came to Venango County, PA, in 1797. He located at the site of Petroleum Center, built a cabin, and lived there two years, deriving his support from the cultivation of a small plot of cleared ground and the results of the chase. In 1799 he returned to the eastern part of the state and procured a yoke of oxen, with various other necessities, and in the spring of 1799 again came to his former residence by way of Pittsburgh. He was a shoemaker by trade, and after the population had increased sufficiently to create a demand for his services, gave his attention to that during the winter, extending the area of his clearing in the summer months, and operating also a saw mill. [HVC 1890, 647]

The McClintocks [apparently refering to Francis and Hamilton, Sr.] were from Lancaster County, PA. [HVC 1890, 91]

In an open space, on a slight declivity above Oil creek, there are several graves inclosed within a wall of masonry. The inscriptions state that Francis McClintock died January 15, 1847, aged seventy-one years, nine months, and eleven days; and that Rachel, wife of Francis McClintock, died July 31, 1848, aged sixty-eight years, six months, and eighteen days. [HVC 1890, 666]
