He graduated from Kiskiminetas Springs School in 1912 and in the same year entered the employ of the Westinghouse Airbrake Company as engineer and salesman. In May, 1917, he enlisted in the 2nd Reserve Officers Training Camp at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, as second lieutenant. He served overseas in the 82nd Division N. A. as platoon and company commander. In September, 1918, he was appointed intelligence officer and aide-de-camp to Brig.-Gen. M. D. Cronin, 163rd Inf. He was discharged as first lieutenant at Camp Dix, New Jersey, Feb. 7, 1919, and again entered the employ of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, and became branch manager for the company in Columbus, Ohio.
