He was born at Perrysville, Pennsylvania, where he was educated in the common schools. About 1879 he was employed as clerk, agent and general manager for the store and office of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Salina, and in 1883, when the station was moved to a new site, he took entire charge. For ten years he held the office of township treasurer, was elected justice of the peace for one term, and served as school director.
