He early assisted his father on the farm, but later learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for a time. For more than twenty-five years he was a resident of Latrobe, where he was engaged in the furniture and undertaking business. Mr. Hartman was a Republican and filled various minor offices in Latrobe, among them that of member of the council. He affiliated with Latrobe Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Royal Arch Chapter, Commandery of Knights Templar, and Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Pittsburgh.
