He grew up on his father's farm, receiving his earliest education in the public schools of the neighborhood. From these he passed to the Ligonier Classical Institute, and in September, 1899, entered Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania, graduating in June, 1903. Shortly after this he was elected principal of the Ligonier public schools, in which position he served during 1904 and 1906. At the expiration of those terms he resigned to become science instructor in the Latrobe High School, retaining this position for a period of four years. On leaving Latrobe he was elected principal of the Swissvale High School, and in this position he continuously remained until June 21, 1917. He was then once more elected principal of the Ligonier public schools. For one year he did postgraduate work in the School of Education, University of Chicago, and his studies were supplemented by extensive travel throughout the United States.
In politics Mr. Shoup was a Democrat, and in November, 1917, he was elected a councilman of the borough of Ligonier. He was a member and trustee of St. James' Evangelical Lutheran Church and a teacher in its Sunday school. In the trusteeship he succeeded his father after the latter's death, and he was also leader of the adult Bible class. Mr. Shoup was a gifted and ready speaker. After his father's death Mr. Shoup cultivated the homestead farm which consisted of one hundred and sixty-three acres. He also looked after his extensive real estate interests.
