General Notes: Husband - John Johnston

He was born in the family home at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains in Washington township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He learned the cooper's trade with his father and also all kinds of brickmaking, and occupied himself with the latter in summer and the former in winter. In the spring of 1842 he came to Waynesboro, and worked in the brickyard of Daniel Tritle until 1843, when he engaged in the business for himself, locating his yard at what later became the corner of Broad and Fifth streets, then an open space. During the Civil war he suspended business, but resumed as soon after its close as there was a demand for brick, and he continued until 1872, when he retired from active business.
