General Notes: Husband - John W. Hartwell

He was born in Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools, and afterwards spent two years at Westminster College. He then became engaged in farming, in which he continued five years on his own account in Lawrence County; and in 1910 he established a farm implement business at New Wilmington, in which he met with a good degree of success. It was in 1914 that he added a Ford automobile agency to his concern, and receiving T. F. Phillips as a partner, he incorporated the business under the name, Hartwell-Phillips Company, Inc. In 1916, this firm established a garage on North Street, New Castle, with a Reo car agency, this being in addition to the New Wilmington business. In 1917, a building at No. 420 Croton Avenue, was purchased, at which time the firm took over the New Castle Ford Agency; and in 1920 Mr. Phillips bought the New Wilmington branch and resigned from the corporation, the Reo business also being sold to the Patterson Motor Company. Mr. Hartwell then organized the Universal Sales Company, Inc., of which he was the president and treasurer; F. C. Bannister, vice-president; and E. M. Dimon, secretary. The entire plant occupied three large buildings, in which there was a total floor space of over 30,000 square feet, and where twenty-five people were employed. This constituted one of the most modernly equipped as well as one of the most beautiful and attractive salesrooms for automobiles in that section of the State.
Mr. Hartwell was a Republican in his political convictions, but he did not seek political preferment. His fraternal affiliations were with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and he was a member of the New Castle Field Club. Mr. Hartwell's favorite recreation was horse racing. He owned three trotters, all pedigreed, which he raced through the Ohio Circuit. His religious faith was that of the Presbyterian Church.
