He worked at shoe-making for many years, and in 1865 embarked in mercantile business in Blooming Valley, [Crawford County, Pennsylvania,] which he followed till 1881. He served six years as Justice of the Peace. He was ordained an Elder of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1879.
