General Notes: Husband - James Newell Hays

He was an engineer/electrician in charge of the power house at Polk State School. The School, (known as "Polk Center") was established in 1897 to care for mentally-handicapped residents from the state of Pennsylvania. It was located just across the street and "up the Hill" from the Hays family's home on Erie Street.
In late 1930 or 1931 (date is uncertain) he was electrocuted while on the job there. The story was that he was told a wire had been turned off - when he touched it, the force of the live current caused him to fall on the floor and thrash about "'like a chicken with its head cut off".
Seriously injured, he was hospitalized in Mercer, PA. Apparently his hands never healed correctly - the tendons were always exposed. He was "never well" after the incident and took much medication for pain.
