General Notes: Husband - Stewart Thompson

When his school days ended, he was persuaded to enter the grocery business. He took his brother into partnership, and together they opened and managed a store. They later disposed of their stock and good-will, and Stewart Thompson obtained employment under C. Welendorf, a grocer of New Castle, Pennsylvania, and eventually he was received as a partner in the business. A few months elapsed and Mr. Thompson bought out Mr. Welendorf, enlarged the store, increased the volume of trade, and was doing fine, when his health broke down. Heeding advice, he retired from the grocery business to enter some field of activity where he might obtain remuneration and at the same time hope to recuperate. He became an appointee for county commissioner, was elected, and acquitted himself so creditably that he was again elected to that office, serving two terms in all. He was also elected councilman of the borough of New Castle, and thus became intimately acquainted with the municipal procedure. His name was presented with substantial indorsements to the United States Treasury Department, and he was given the appointment of deputy internal revenue collector, which position he filled.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Republican Party. He was formerly an enlisted man in Company F, 100th Regiment of Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard. He was affiliated with the Free and Accepted Masons, being a member of the Commandery, Knights Templar. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Castle.
