General Notes: Husband - Dr. Salem Heilman

He was educated in the public schools and academies of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Having concluded to follow the profession of a physician, he accordingly began the study of this science in 1868, under a practicing physician. In the autumn of 1869 he entered Jefferson Medical College, of Philadelphia, from which institution he was graduated March 12, 1871. On April 6 of the same year in which he graduated he opened an office in Sharon, where he was constantly engaged in his professional duties and activities for more than thirty-five years thereafter.
The winter of 1886-87 Dr. Heilman spent in Europe, taking special courses in general surgery and gynecology in the medical colleges and hospitals of Berlin, Vienna, Paris and London. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American Medical Association; was president of the Mercer County Medical Society. For twenty-eight years Dr. Heilman was surgeon of the Fifteenth Regiment National Guards of Pennsylvania, holding the rank of major of his regiment. During the Spanish-American war the doctor served nine months as chief surgeon for Pennsylvania. After the organization of the Protected Home Circle, Dr. Heilman was the supreme medical examiner for this fraternal beneficiary order, of which he was one of the organizers. The doctor was a thirty-second degree Mason and a Shriner, belonging to the Consistory and Shrine at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows as well as the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. In his politics he was affiliated with the Democratic party. He twice received the nomination as his party's choice for a seat in Congress, but owing to the overwhelming Republican majority in his district he was not successful at the polls. In 1894 he was elected burgess of Sharon, serving three years.
